Species description
Frostmole are powerful burrowing fenborn with broad foreclaws and blood-vessel countercurrent systems that keep the digging limbs warm. They tunnel beneath snow rather than through frozen mineral soil whenever possible.
Field note
Frostmole tunnels aerate saturated ground during thaw and can redirect meltwater away from plant crowns. Construction crews sometimes mistake fresh mounds for pipe failures and destroy colonies during unnecessary excavation.
