Survey abstract

Kilnward is built around heat that cannot simply be turned off at the end of a shift. Foundries, kilns, machine shops, and rail yards glow through most nights, and whole neighborhoods keep time by whistles from works they do not own.

Bellows Row

Bellows Row is less a single street than a continuous line of workshops sharing walls, vents, apprentices, and grudges. Tools and habitat fittings made here travel farther than most of the people who made them.

Red Rail Exchange

Freight changes hands beneath iron roofs stained orange by mineral dust. A manifest can be checked three times and still emerge with a fourth description by the time the load reaches the eastern yards.

Work and debt

Kilnward’s respectable foundries share labor routes with debt crews, informal repair shops, and freight that becomes harder to document the closer it gets to Slag Below. Local unions and chartered concerns disagree sharply over where necessity ends and coercion begins.
